Description: This overview examines co-occurring mental and substance use disorders as they may develop in youth and identifies factors that may contribute to the development of such disorders.  Effects on normal development and the need to apply a developmental approach to services are reviewed.  While many combinations of disorders are possible, we will explore some prevalent pathways and the impact on engagement, assessment and treatment options relevant to youth.
 
Objectives: Participants will be able to:
  • Discuss a “prevalence snapshot” of 35.3 million (US Census 2014) youth (18-25) living with ‘co-occurring disorders”
  • Identify the developmental impact of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
  • Examine emerging evidence-based and promising practices for youth with COD
  • List factors key to engaging youth in discussions regarding co-occurring disorders
