Description: Children often present complex arrays of symptoms and behaviors that are challenging both for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.  This course examines the potential biopsychosocial impact of trauma on children, including attachment disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  It also examines empirically supported treatments and interventions designed to address the impact of abuse and trauma at different developmental stages within childhood.

This is part of BHE's 10-course Trauma Series

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine the impact of trauma and abuse on a child's development
  • Explore the effects of family, age, gender and sociocultural factors on the traumatic experience
  • Review symptoms and assessment criteria for disorders related to childhood trauma, including the DSM-5 developmental subtype of PTSD called "Post-traumatic Stress Disorder for Children 6 Years and Younger."
  • Describe alternate ways of viewing and labeling "difficult" behaviors, using the domains of attachment, emotional dysregulation and sense of self
  • Discuss empirically supported treatment options currently considered to be most effective

**Trauma Series**                                                                                                                                           BHE's trauma series provides an array of courses that support the development of trauma-informed care, assessment, and treatment planning for children, adolescents and adults.  Each trauma series course is rooted in the understanding that trauma is a fundamental issue for many people seeking treatment, and that trauma-informed care is essential to promote recovery and resilience.

A certificate of completion is available for those who successfully complete 50 hours of courses in the trauma-informed training series.  Interested individuals have three years to complete the ten courses.  Each course is five hours in duration, with two required core courses and eight elective courses.  These ten courses are offered via webinar through DHS Training Series in 2024, with the hope to offer these courses and/or others in future years.

The two required courses are "The Fundamentals: Trauma Definitions and Diagnoses" and "The Fundamentals: Trauma-Informed Care." Beyond that, BHE offers a rotating array of trauma-related courses on many topics, including: children, adolescents, families, gender, race, treatment approaches, vicarious trauma and many others.

The rationale is to offer a selection of courses that are current and meet the interests and needs of providers.  Each course comes with a certificate for 5 hours of continuing education.  When you have successfully accomplished 50 hours of training, you will receive an additional certificate of completion for the full trauma series through the mail.
