Exploring Ethical Issues in Substance Use Treatment:
Abstinence-Only Harm vs Reduction

Training offered by Drexel University

Continuing Education Credits            No Cost            1.5 hrs.

Description:  In terms of addiction treatment, abstinence-only has been the primary treatment modality for decades, while harm reduction has only recently entered the field as a viable alternative.  Both constructs are explored through the lenses of specific ethical frameworks, and participants will listen to debate-style information about the merits and drawbacks of each approach. Towards the conclusion of the course, a third viewpoint will be presented which outlines the importance of considering both perspectives for sound ethical practice.

Learning Objectives:  By the end of this web-based training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the general philosophies of harm reduction and abstinence-only approaches.
  • “Debate” the merits and drawbacks of each approach through specific ethical frameworks.
  • Explore clinical and ethical rationales behind choosing one paradigm over the other, or incorporating aspects of both models.
