Motivational Interviewing:  The Principles

Training offered by Drexel University

Continuing Education Credits            No Cost            4 hrs.

Description:   This online training is a video-recorded version of a three-day intensive course in the principles and initial practices of William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick’s Motivational Interviewing. Their theory and practice is, in turn, rooted in an understanding of the Transtheoretical Stages of Change found in the work of Prochaska and DiClemente. The principles and skills are highly complementary paired with values and practices of recovery-oriented services and supports. The live version of this training contained multiple role plays, videos, and group activities; however, these facets do not transfer easily for an online learning format. As such, they have been removed from the online version.

Learning Objectives:  By the end of this web-based training, participants will be able to:

  • Outline Prochaska and DiClemente’s stages of change and how they are useful in understanding human readiness to change behaviors;
  • Identify the general principles and spirit of Motivational Interviewing;
  • Describe how they can use Motivational Interviewing practices in their own work setting.
