Description: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an effective approach for engaging people in behavior change efforts. Embracing the philosophies behind MI is a crucial first step before helpers can successfully utilize specific techniques and skills. This training explores the foundational aspects of an MI consistent approach, including: the four elements of the spirit and stages of change.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this web-based training, participants will be able to:

Outline Prochaska and DiClemente’s stages of change and their utility in understanding human readiness to change behaviors.

List three traps that can cause disengagement.

Identify the four elements of the spirit of Motivational Interviewing.

Describe how they can use the spirit of Motivational Interviewing in their own work settings and/or personal lives.
