Suicide in the Time of COVID-19:
Managing Stressors and Prevention Opportunities

Training offered by Drexel University

Continuing Education Credits            No Cost            1.5 hrs.

Description:  As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, we are experiencing a host of intense new stressors at a time when traditional coping methods are being disrupted or removed. As the novel coronavirus continues to alter our lives, fears related to personal safety, safety of our loved ones, financial and resource insecurity, and disruption of our normal routines adds an additional layer of risk to those already struggling with mental health concerns. The intense feelings of uncertainty and anxiety about the “new normal” may create new risk factors for the development or exacerbation of fear, stress, trauma, anger, and depression.

The pandemic comes at a time when suicide rates among children, adolescents, and adults were already rising. In January 2020, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 40% increase in suicide deaths among those aged 16 to 64 over the past two decades. While it is still unclear whether the pandemic will contribute to increased suicidality and suicide deaths, there are protective measures we can take to mitigate an escalation in mental illness and suicidal thoughts and behaviors among those we serve. In this course, we will summarize and reflect on some of these measures, including screening all clients for suicide, collaboratively developing safety plans appropriate during the pandemic, and advocating for improved access mental health services.

Learning Objectives:  By the end of this web-based training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify 5 ways Covid-19 may contribute to suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
  • Summarize 3 suicide risk factors associated with Covid-19
  • Reflect on 3 prevention strategies to mitigate suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
